Heavy camera gear is the fastest way to ruin a solo backpacking trip. After filming over fifty vlog episodes on the road, I have stripped my daily carry down to one medium backpack that never leaves my side.
The Camera Kit of an On-The-Go Vlogger
I do not use giant tripods or heavy cinema cameras that draw unwanted attention in quiet villages. A sturdy pocket-sized gimbal camera, an external microphone with a wind muff, and two extra batteries are all it takes to capture high-quality audio and video.
Keeping a low profile allows me to capture authentic daily life without making the locals feel uncomfortable. Always ask for permission before pointing your lens at a vendor or a family sitting on their porch.
Packing Only the Essentials
Three quick-dry shirts, one pair of rugged utility pants, and a compact rain jacket are all the clothes you need. If it does not fit into a thirty-liter pack, it stays behind at home.
